Karen is currently a member of the Conscious Leadership Guild and the GLEN global community evolving the methods and practices of collaboration. She is also a founding member of the Global Consciousness Institute (GCI). For over twenty years she has pioneered transformational approaches to working with leaders and their organizations as a board member of the Spirit and Business International Institute, a Fellow with the World Business Academy, and a speaker at Organization Development and Organization Transformation conferences.

She enjoys convening thought provoking conversations. For instance, in 1989 she hosted an international symposium on Intuition in the Workplace with William Miller as part of IMD business school in Switzerland.

Since 2012, Karen has convened an annual retreat for women leaders on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Women leaders, businesswomen, activists, artists, educators, and authors enjoy a nourishing week of personal discovery and professional development. For the first time, this year’s retreat is on-line.

Karen created a series of women’s forums, Honoring the Wisdom and Power of Women Leaders in 2003, San Francisco and 2005, Switzerland with Spirit in Business International, and 2004, Santa Barbara at the World Business Academy, “Global Mind Change” conference. For many years, Karen and her partner Fay Freed, delivered Next Octave Leadership Programs in Mexico. These programs invite women to become leaders who recognize the necessity of their wisdom, power and leadership for a sustainable, healthy and loving world, now and for the generations that follow.

Karen is a published author and experienced speaker in high performance management, managing complex change, developing women leaders, meeting effectiveness, and developing wisdom in leadership at professional conferences like Employee Assistance Professionals, ASTD, EBBF, and Women’s International Network. In addition Karen has been asked to speak at company off sites, women’s retreats, and universities like Stanford, CIIS and JFK.

As an experienced speaker Karen provides a variety of keynotes and training programs that speak to a wide range of audiences. She consistently receives excellent ratings from program participants, conference organizers, and meeting planners. These presentations are effective, imaginative, inspirational, and practical and can be customized to meet your audience, meeting objectives and time frame.

Because of a passion for spirit-based whole-child education she co-founded the GreenWood School in 1992, an innovative Waldorf inspired elementary school.

Her two adult children and their mates, her husband, and big fluffy dog bring her great joy when at home in Mill Valley, California, where she has lived for over 25 years and enjoys gardening, writing and hiking Mt. Tamalpais.

“It is rare that a speaker touches on something that is new for the audience, or that the topic confirmed for them something they had felt, but had never been able to articulate before. Karen's presentation, “Women’s Wisdom at Work”, for the International Employee Assistance Professionals Association (EAPA), got people thinking. She has a command and real passion for the subject. I was impressed by Karen's use of material from her work and research, as well as information from other cultures and activities in other countries.” - Michael Webb, Past President, San Francisco EAPA

The Wisdom connection

Where Wisdom Meets the Feminine

Our mission is twofold: to advance women in leadership and develop women as wise leaders who create meaningful results through programs and retreats.

Our work towards an integrated wisdom starts in a healthy and balanced relationship of the feminine and masculine. We believe that this wisdom is up to the task of more effectively organizing human society so that it is sustainable, vitally healthy, and truly prosperous.

The Wisdom Connection programs and services draw from over three decades of consulting and coaching with women, extensive research and personal exploration into many aspects of wisdom and power – from the power of love to the role of intuition in leadership. The 9 Facets of Feminine Wisdom in Leadership illuminate women’s natural approaches to leadership, authentic presence, coherent intention, and resonant results.

We highlight crucial distinctions and empowering insights to guide complex change - personal, organizational, and in the larger field.

Our programs develop women leaders and their companies by utilizing the untapped resource of wisdom in leadership. Since 2012 - 2019, Karen convened an annual retreat for women leaders on the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Women leaders, businesswomen, activists, artists, educators, and authors enjoyed a nourishing week of personal discovery and professional development. Since 2020 the programs, co-lead with Dianne Morrison, moved online. Join us!

A Bit of history

The Wisdom Connection was co-founded with Fay Freed in 2006. Hundreds of women transformed their leadership through our Next Octave Women’s Leadership Development Programs held in the Mexico and the US from 2006 – 2012.

Conversations with Remarkable Women were a series of evenings in 2010-2012 where Fay and Karen interviewed women leaders like Lynne Twist, Barbara Marx Hubbard, Patricia Ellsberg, and Geneen Roth. Visit our Media and Resources page to hear these remarkable women.

In 2003, 2004, and 2005 Karen, through her nonprofit, the Wisdom Leadership Initiative, created a series of women’s forums, Honoring the Wisdom and Power of Women Leaders, in San Francisco and Switzerland with Spirit in Business International, and in Santa Barbara at the World Business Academy, “Global Mind Change” conference.

Our focus is on developing feminine wisdom and feminine power of women leaders. It's time!

We have a role to play. If our leadership makes the essential difference, we need to lead with feminine wisdom at the core. But what is it? (visit Karen's blog for more insight, skills development, and stories from many wise women on this topic)

The Wisdom Connection Vision of Feminine Wisdom

Feminine wisdom is the essential core of a woman, the source of her personal power, compassion, relational capacity, and far-reaching vision. After decades of research, and working with hundreds of women, we've found that when a woman reclaims, refines and reveals her feminine wisdom she experiences unprecedented confidence and extraordinary joy that expands her leadership influence and impact in family, community, business and the planet.

Are you Trying too Hard?

Without a flourishing Feminine Wisdom, you might spend your life slightly off kilter, off balance, trying so hard to be “right”, to be sufficient, to make real all your heart’s desires. Repeating the past, feeling trapped in what you’ve known, are you depleted from over-giving and crafting a life without a central source of personal power?

Craft a New Future with your Wisdom

A new future cannot be created from what we’ve known in the past. By developing the asset of your integrated wisdom, you'll become an open and curious person capable of creating a new future because you stand in an unshakeable essence inside yourself. No longer stuck in an endless loop, repeating unsatisfying past behaviors and choices, your wisdom can show you how to get off the “merry-go-round” and emerge into a life filled with all that matters most.

A Woman and Her Feminine Wisdom

The best part is that when you draw your feminine wisdom back into the center of your being, and link it to your leadership, you naturally increase your contribution - both fertility and power - of your service to your family, community, organization, and the world!

— My Commitment —
I stand for everyone accessing their essential wisdom and the determination of their wills to create a world where the forces of the heart are balanced with the drive for accomplishment, a world where we honor the unique gifts and talents of individuals and weave them into coherent wise collective efforts, a world where we hold the earth’s natural cycles in great regard and work toward a peaceful and creative relationship among all peoples, and a world where beauty is revered.
